Fresh cherries from thousands of smallholder farmers in Ywangan are supplied to Mandalay Coffee Group. Each farmer cultivates only .25-2 acres. Multiple varieties of Arabica are interspersed with jackfruit, djenkol bean, papaya and other crops. Most farmers began cultivating coffee in the early 1980s as part of a poppy flower replacement initiative. Some of the farmers in the USAID sponsored Winrock workshops. Winrock is the organization that oversees training and development. The topics include agronomy, financial management, harvesting and dry natural processing. This coffee has a sweet, herbaceous aroma and tastes of chocolate, nuts and honey.
